Epitomizing the idea, the first zine is called “Meet me at Hudspeth’s Corner.” The convenience store at 14th and Cedar turns out to be the most recent iteration of a grocery that has been at that spot since 1923. In the mid-1950s, the daughter of the original builder/grocer named her renovated grocery building Hudspeth’s Corner in honor of her father. The story of the rise, fall and slow rise again of the businesses at 14th and Cedar is an example of the larger trends buffeting East Austin and the city as a whole since the early 1900s when the first streets where mere dusty trails.
